With the task of replacing Cadillac’s discontinued ATS and CTS sedans, the all-new 2020 CT5 is also the American luxury carmaker’s hope for battling the BMW 5, Audi 6, and other favourites in the midsize luxury sedan niche.

With three trim levels to choose from, a substantial drivetrain on each, and loads of appealing add-on features, this new Caddy is lining up to be a cornerstone model for the carmaker, as Cadillac surely must have intended it to be. To determine if the new CT5 has the right stuff to also bring competitors to their knees, let’s take a closer look at this latest addition to Cadillac’s performance luxury lineup.

What Are the Model Options?

The 2020 Cadillac CT5 comes in three model options, starting with the base Luxury trim level offering a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, banging out a solid 237 horses and 258 lb-ft of torque. An all-wheel drive (AWD) option is also available on this standard rear-wheel drive level.

For a few thousand more bucks, a hop up to the Premium Luxury and Sport AWD options gets you a 3.0-litre twin turbo V6 to crank out an even mightier 335 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque. The sports version distinguishes itself from its equally-priced counterpart with its sport grille, fascias, rockers, and spoiler and a Brembo performance front-braking system feature.

All three models offer a responsive 10-speed automatic transmission – helping the driver rocket out 0-96 km/h in just 4.9 seconds on the Premium Luxury and Sport versions. The CT5 comes loaded with driver-select modes to optimize transmission, steering and braking calibration, allowing for precision steering and optimal performance handling.

What’s Good About the Interior?

The sophisticated cockpit of the Premium Luxury and Sport CT5 models offer wireless charging and a climate package to include a heated steering wheel, as well as heated, ventilated and massaging front seats with power adjustments and power-adjusting bolsters. The 10-inch infotainment display is easy to learn, with buttons and knobs offering a handy alternative to the touchscreen technology.

If you want to become a mechanic, you’re sure to appreciate the engineering behind the CT5’s advanced safety features, including the most up-to-date rear-view cam displaying live video for safer reversing. The base CT5 offers forward collision alert and auto emergency braking, while the Premium Luxury and Sport models also offer lane change and side blind zone alert, as well as enhanced auto emergency braking and reverse automatic braking.

Any Additional Perks Worth a Mention to Pros with Automotive Mechanic Careers?

Those seeking an automotive mechanic career are likely to be intrigued by the My Mode drive mode—an additional toy to appeal to drivers’ more primal instincts, allowing customization for a louder engine growl within the cabin in response to acceleration.

A CT5 Platinum package offers additional driver awareness perks, like a following distance indicator, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, head-up display, 8 in. gauge cluster, and IntelliBeam.

You can catch a quick glimpse of the CT5 in this short clip:

With a beefier drivetrain and more impressive cabin, the CT5 appears to handily replace its predecessors—now it remains to be seen if it can live up to Cadillac’s hopes to de-throne some of the German carmakers who’ve traditionally led the way in the luxury sedan niche.
