Nissan has just let slip its plans for a brand new addition to the electric vehicle (EV) scene—a whole new series of hybrid EVs equipped with mini ICE engines, giving them an extended battery range.

Nissan Engineers Turning a New ‘Leaf’
The Nissan Leaf is the highest-selling electric car in the world. But Nissan isn’t content to rest on its laurels.
The company has designed a next-generation Leaf with a small gasoline engine included, to mitigate the common consumer anxiety of driving engine-free. The name of the new series won’t be released until mid-2016 (it’s likely not to be another Leaf), but Nissan’s EV engineering division manager Yoshi Shimoida says that among industry insiders, “we call it a series hybrid.”
He says the car will be similar in concept to BMW’s i3 REx, but is remaining closed-lipped about many of the project’s details. “It’s something like that,” Shimoida explained, referencing the i3 REx. “Next year we’ll announce what it’s called.”

Nissan says it’s looking to broaden its electric vehicle stable in light of cars like the extended-range Chevy Volt, the aforementioned BMW, and other plug-in hybrids hitting the market.
Nissan plans to lead the way on range-extended EVs. Shimoida says: “In the future, Nissan will add to the line-up of EV systems an engine that is only for generating energy,” and predicts batteries that will last at least twice as long as what EV batteries on today’s market are capable of.
At the recent Tokyo Motor Show, Nissan even demonstrated a wireless charging pad that gave equivalent charging rates to that of a ‘Level 2’ (240-volt) EV charger.
