Students in car repair training curious to know who is the largest vehicle manufacturer in the world

These days it seems like every auto manufacturer has a variety of brands under their umbrella, with approximately 17 companies owning about 40 major car brands. Some companies like Hyundai have a smaller profile, which just includes a couple of different brands and car lines. Other car companies, on the other hand, sport a massive portfolio. In fact, Fiat owns everything from Chrysler, Dodge, Ferrari, and Jeep, along with several other brands to boot.

It’s no surprise that the three companies that make our list all own several popular car brands. What are they? Read on to discover three of the largest vehicle manufacturers in the world.

1. Volkswagen: Students in Auto Repair School May Know They Sold the Most Units in 2016

In an eager race to the top, Volkswagen has become the largest automotive maker in the entire world. Back in 2016, the company reached the impressive milestone, despite being in the midst of an emissions scandal.

Volkswagen managed to get ahead in several key markets like China. China saw an increase of sales by 14 per cent, while Central and Eastern Europe grew by 7 per cent. According to Forbes, in 2016 Volkswagen and its brands sold 10.3 million vehicles, the most out of any automotive company that year.

With sales like that, it’s no surprise Volkswagen takes the cake with their impressive portfolio of brands, which includes the following:

  • Audi
  • Bentley
  • Lamborghini
  • Bugatti
  • Porsche

2. Toyota: Pros With Automotive Careers May Know They Are Always a Top Contender

Most years, Toyota Motor Company is the front-runner for the largest automotive manufacturer in the world. However, the tables have turned and it’s now sunk to the number two spot after Volkswagen. According to Forbes, Toyota sold 10.2 million vehicles in 2016, coming in about 100,000 units shy of Volkswagen’s record-breaking amount. Under Toyota’s umbrella of car brands are Lexus, Daihatsu, and Scion. Although Toyota and its brands didn’t take the crown this year, they managed to improve their year over year sales by 1.3 per cent.

The Toyota Camry, Toyota Corolla, and the Toyota RAV4 are some of Toyota’s top-selling vehicles. During your automotive career it’s likely you will encounter these vehicles on a regular basis, since they are some of the most popular cars on the planet.

3. General Motors: Pros With Automotive Careers May See This Company’s Cars Often

As graduates of auto repair school likely know, General Motors is a company that also tends to dominate the vehicle market. In 2016, GM sold 267,341 vehicles in Canada and their vehicle deliveries in China rose by 7.1 per cent, totalling 3,870,587 vehicles.

GM owns many distinct car brands like Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, GMC, and more. Already in 2017, the Chevrolet Volt experienced its best-ever January sales, which were up by 56 per cent. With electric vehicles rapidly growing in popularity, the Volt could bring GM and its brand Chevrolet to new heights in 2017, if the trend continues.
